You have some of Britain’s most beautiful landscape on your doorstep when staying at The Hideaway. How you choose to spend your time here is entirely up to you - here are some ideas...

Retail Therapy

Shopping in The Lake District is an opportunity to browse away from the high street; with a wealth of independent gift, clothing and homeware shops you might just find that unique gift or treat for yourself that you wouldn’t find at home.

Windermere, Bowness, Grasmere, Ambleside and Hawkshead are particular hot spots.

Brantwood

Brantwood is the former home of John Ruskin, and filled wit his treasures and a beautiful hillside garden overlooking Coniston Water.

Blackwell

Blackwell is Britain's finest surviving Arts and Crafts house designed by M.H.Baillie Scott, situated on the banks of Lake Windermere, it has some spectacular views.

Windermere Lake Cruises

An absolute must to enjoy at least once during your stay. Cruises up to Waterhead for Ambleside from Bowness or down to Lakeside to see the southern end of Lake Windermere.

See the fells from a different perspective in complete relaxation and great to do whatever the weather.

Walking, Strolling and Hiking

With 5 of England's highest mountains, The Lake District offers a challenge to the hardiest of walkers.

But there are walks for everyone in the Lake District including lower level fell and lakeside routes.

Orrest Head View Point

The foot of Orrest Head is just 5 minutes from The Hideaway a gentle 45 minute climb, rewarded with spectacular views of Lake Windermere and the Langdale Pikes.

Hill Top

Hill Top Farm was Beatrix Potter's first house, bought using money she had made from her early books. Today visitors can view the untouched house, exactly as Beatrix left it.

Cycling in and around the Lakes

As with walking, there are cycling routes for all. From quiet bridleways and designated cycle paths to mountain biking trails and road biking routes galore including England's steepest road, Hartknott Pass!

Stage 2 of The Tour de France passes Windermere on July 3rd 2027 too.

Royalty Cinema and Events

More than just a cinema, The Royalty at Bowness also has regular events such as theatre performances, live music and comedy nights.

All housed in an Art Deco building.

Bike hire can be found at Windermere Station at Country Lanes Cycle Centre.

Canoe, kayak and SUP hire from Windermere Canoe Kayak at the YHA at Ambleside.

Off road driving adventures from Kankku.

There are more beautiful local walks as well as Orrest Head which start from and finish at The Hideaway including Millerground and Adelaide Hill and Brantfell & Post Knott and a look out from Claife Heights viewing station.

Alternatively, why not head north to Coniston Water, where two traditional timber launches offer three different circular routes on Coniston Water or sail in a sumptuous, upholstered saloon on the Steam Yacht Gondola. Further north again, where 'Ullswater Steamers’ create the perfect opportunity to combine a lake cruise with some of the most famous and spectacular walks in the Lake District, also makes for a great day out.
