It’s the time of year for long walks and snuggling up in front of an open fire, with a winter tipple. The Lake District, and Windermere in particular, boasts some of the most attractive ‘chocolate-box’ pubs in the country. Our favourites, which we highly recommend to our guests, are as follows:

Christmas Activities in Windermere

The weather has turned cold in Windermere and the fire is roaring. The tea and delicious homemade cake is even more comforting than usual to our guests following their afternoon walks. Christmas is a very special time of year here at the Hideaway as the cold and the dark nights make for the coziest possible atmosphere. There is a truly magical feel to the Lake District as the year draws to a close. 

The Royalty Cinema, A Gem in The Heart of Bowness-on-Windermere

On a dark, rainy evening in Windermere there are some lovely things to do. One of them, just down the road in Bowness, is to enjoy an evening at the beautiful and independent Royalty Cinema.

Built in 1926 and opened as the public hall it was originally designed to provide a cinema, theatre and a place to dance for the people of Windermere. It was renamed ‘The Royalty’ in 1930 and has remained as such ever since. In 1955, the building was converted specifically into a cinema, the dressing rooms as they were became the foyer and toilets, the 65 seat circle lounge followed later.
